The Inquisitions Post Mortem for Richard III

One of the Department’s major research projects in Mapping the Medieval Countryside which involves digitising the published calendars of inquisitions post mortem. It is directed by Michael Hicks  and is  funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council. The inquisitions are records of the lands at death of important landowners from 1236 to 1642 and a major source for rural society, the economy, population and much else. We are now able to extend this project with a large grant from the Richard III Society for the calendaring and digitising of the inquisitions for Richard III and an eventual book. This will start filling large gaps from 1447-85 including the Wars of the Roses and will  be a prototype for the full calendar eventually intended. Dr Gordon McKelvie has been appointed as the half-time Researcher for this important project. We are most grateful to the Richard III Society for their generous support.
